With an overwhelming 206 affirmative votes, the House of Representatives had finally passed the measure lowering the retirement age for government employees from 60 to 56.
The Chamber passed House Bill 8683 which seeks to amend Section13-A of Republic Act 8291, also known as “Government Service Insurance Act of 1997. Government employees who had reached 56 years of age are now available to file for retirement and avail an old-age pension for life from the GSIS.
Principal author of the Bill and, ACT Teachers Party List Representative Antonio Tinio, said that it is high time to heed for our civil servant’s clamor for an earlier retirement age for them to enjoy their retirement benefits in as much as possible.
The substitute bill provide that a government employee should have met the following;
- An employee should have rendered at least 15 years of government service
- He/She must be at least 56 years of age upon retirement.
- He/She is not receiving a monthly pension benefit from total disability
The Bill will be a welcome idea for retirees to spend more time with their loved ones in relative comfort and enjoy the fruits of their labor.
This could also mean more employment opportunities for those seeking employment in the government agencies and serve our country.
